A figure with ram’s horns and bat wings sits on a black pedestal, holding an inverted torch. At its feet, a man and a woman are chained by the neck, sprouting small horns and tails; yet the chains hang loose, and they could slip them off. The Devil is the energy of whatever binds us because, for now, we still find it convenient to stay bound.
Symbolism
- The loose chains: the bondage is real, but the way out is within arm’s reach.
- The figures with horns and tails: how attachment slowly makes us resemble what controls us.
- The inverted torch: desire that consumes instead of illuminating.
- The inverted pentagram: matter placed above spirit.
- Correspondences: Capricorn, the element of Earth, Hebrew letter Ayin (ע), per the Golden Dawn.
Upright meaning
The Devil reveals the invisible chains: emotional, financial or physical dependencies; obsessions, fears, patterns that repeat even though you know they hurt you. It speaks of materialism, of passions that overflow, and of relationships where desire weighs more than care. But it is not a card of condemnation. It also represents vital energy, magnetism, ambition and raw power: the question is who is using whom. When it appears, it asks what you are not daring to let go of, and why, deep down, you do not want to.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the chains truly loosen. It points to awareness of a dependency, the breaking of a destructive pattern, the courage to look at your own shadow without running from it. It is the beginning of a liberation. Sometimes it warns of the opposite: that you are minimizing a problem that is still there, or freeing yourself from one excess only to fall into another. The difference lies in how honest you are with yourself.
In love
Upright, it speaks of intense, magnetic attraction, but also of jealousy, possessiveness, emotional dependency, or bonds held together by need rather than love. Ask yourself whether you are with someone or tied to someone. Reversed, it announces the end of a toxic relationship, the recognition of a harmful attachment, or the decision to reclaim your freedom without losing your passion.
In work and money
Unchecked ambition, manipulative environments, a job that keeps you for the paycheck while it drains you. It can also point to material success won through fierce determination. Ask yourself what price you are paying. Reversed, it indicates leaving a toxic job, no longer measuring your worth by what you earn, or breaking with a debt or a spending habit that was suffocating you.
The card’s advice
Look at the chain before you blame the pedestal. Whatever binds you needs your permission to stay. Accept your desire without repressing it and without letting it rule you: that is real freedom.
If you want to find out which chain you are about to release, draw your cards with Goetia and let the Devil show you your shadow without fear.
