A boat crosses gray water; a hunched figure and a child sit in silence while someone rows toward the far shore. Six swords stand in the bow, and on the side they are heading toward, the water is already calm. The Six of Swords is the energy of the crossing: leaving behind what hurt without pretending it weighs nothing.
Symbolism
- The boat: the passage from one state of mind to another; no one arrives without moving.
- The six swords in the bow: the wounds that travel with you; pulling them out would sink the boat.
- The rough water and the still water: what you leave and what you seek; calm in sight, not yet underfoot.
- The rower: help that arrives, or your own will holding the course.
- Correspondences: the Air element; the decan of Mercury in Aquarius, the mind finding a way out by thinking differently.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Six of Swords marks a necessary transition. It may be literal, such as a move or a trip, or internal: leaving a mood, a cycle of worry, or a chapter you have already closed. It is not a euphoric change; it carries melancholy, because something is left behind. But the direction is right. It also shows support, sometimes from someone who guides you quietly. The worst is over; now you row.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the boat will not move. It speaks of resistance to change, of drifting back into what you had already left, of cycles that refuse to close, or a journey kept postponed. Or you carry so much emotional baggage that movement is impossible, or you are fleeing a problem instead of crossing through it. Look at what holds you and whether you truly want to stay there.
In love
Upright, it may be a relationship healing after a crisis, a couple entering a new stage together, or a mature separation that seeks the wellbeing of both. If you are single, it shows you steering away from a pattern you no longer want to repeat. Reversed, a bond that stagnates, or the temptation to go back to what hurt you.
In work and money
Professionally it announces job changes, relocations, or gradual improvement after a hard stretch. It is not a sudden leap but an orderly step toward something steadier. With money, you are leaving a period of strain behind, provided you hold course and do not spend what has not yet arrived. Reversed, a career change that keeps stalling, or feeling stuck in a role that no longer fits.
The card’s advice
Move forward even if it still hurts. You do not need to be fully healed to cross; you need to get into the boat. Accept the help offered, and trust that the calm shore exists even before you set foot on it.
If you are in a transition and want to know what waits on the other shore, draw the cards with Goetia before you set sail.
