Five young people in clothes of different colors swing their wands in the air; they seem to be fighting, yet no one is hurt and no blow lands. More than a battle, this is a rehearsal, a tournament, a shouting match where everyone talks and no one listens. The Five of Wands is Fire meeting other fires: competition, friction and the fertile chaos that comes before order.
Symbolism
- The five crossed wands: energies clashing with no shared direction; plenty of force, little coordination.
- The clothes of different colors: each person defending their own idea, style and point of view.
- The absence of wounds: the conflict is real but not destructive; it is practice and learning.
- The flat, open ground: no one has the advantage; everything is still to be decided.
- Correspondences: the element of Fire; the decan of Saturn in Leo.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Five of Wands announces competition, disagreement and friction. It may be a team with too many voices, a rivalry at work, arguments at home or a clash of egos. The card does not punish conflict: it shows it as a test of character and as an engine. Friction makes the spark, and the spark makes something new, as long as the rules are respected.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the conflict changes shape. Sometimes it is the end of the dispute: peace is made, agreement is found, competition turns into collaboration. Other times it means you are avoiding a necessary confrontation to keep things comfortable, or that the fight has moved inside you: opposing desires that leave you stuck. Work out which of the two is yours.
In love
Upright, there is tension in the couple: frequent arguments, power struggles, competing for attention, or the feeling that each of you is playing a different game. It does not speak of a breakup, but of the need to get on the same page. If you are single, there may be rivals, or several people interested at once. Reversed, the fighting calms down or, alternatively, you swallow what bothers you to avoid the clash.
In work and money
This is the card of the competitive workplace: brainstorms that never land, teams with no clear leader, rivalry over a promotion. It can be stimulating if you play fair and let your skills show. With money, it warns of scattered spending and competing without a strategy. Reversed, the team finds its direction, or you decide to walk away from a fight that is not worth it.
The card’s advice
Do not fear friction, but give it rules. Choose which battles deserve your fire and let the rest burn out on their own.
If you are in the middle of a conflict and cannot tell whether to fight it or let it go, draw your cards with Goetia and find your place in the scene.
