Four of Cups – Minor Arcana

A figure sits beneath a tree with arms crossed, staring at three cups in the grass with evident boredom. Beside them, a hand emerges from a cloud and offers a fourth cup they do not seem to notice. The Four of Cups is the energy of an emotional pause: the moment when nothing you have moves you, and what is new slips by unseen.

Symbolism

  • The crossed arms: closure, defense, and an apathy that shields you from feeling.
  • The three cups on the ground: what you already have and have stopped valuing.
  • The fourth cup in the cloud: a real opportunity arriving while you look the other way.
  • The tree: shelter, but also root; introspection nourishes as long as it does not become a hiding place.
  • Correspondences: the element of Water; the decan of the Moon in Cancer.

Upright meaning

The Four of Cups speaks of lost motivation, weariness, and a dissatisfaction that cannot explain itself. Everything may be in order and you still feel something is missing. It points to ignored opportunities, offers that fail to excite you, and a tendency to fixate on what you lack. It is not a bad card: it is a call to look inward. Sometimes a pause is necessary to reorganize your inner world before you choose again.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the figure looks up. It marks the end of stagnation: you notice again what you once dismissed, your enthusiasm returns, and you accept an offer you had let pass. On its less favorable side, it can mean you have been shut inside yourself too long and introspection has turned into isolation; or that you leave apathy in a hurry and grab any cup without looking.

In love

Upright, it reflects monotony in a relationship, waning interest, or doubts about accepting a new romance. If you are single, you may be closed off by fear or unhealed wounds and dismissing someone worth knowing. Reversed, it brings an emotional reawakening: you rediscover your partner, accept an invitation, or decide to give love another chance with an open heart.

In work and money

Professionally, it shows job dissatisfaction, low motivation, and proposals that do not move you. A real chance to grow may be sitting right in front of you, invisible through fatigue or disillusionment. Financially, it suggests stability without joy. Reversed, it announces renewed interest, acceptance of a change, or finally recognizing an offer that was there all along.

The card’s advice

Before you say no, find out where the reluctance comes from: the situation, or your inner state. Look at the cup being offered with fresh eyes, not the eyes of habit. If the card falls reversed, ride the momentum, but choose calmly what you are going to accept.
